Winter Break
December 16, 2024 - January 5, 2025
Winter Break is the approximate timeframe Green University LLC sets aside for the holidays. Immersion students are always free to come and go as needed throughout the year, and all are welcome to stay at River Camp throughout the holiday break. But for anyone contemplating holiday travel plans, this is the ideal window to head home for a few weeks. Those who stay on at camp through the holidays may continue crafting on individual projects or organize a holiday celebration of their own design. This year we may host a Christmas Eve ice skating party on the pond at River Camp.
Spring Break
March 1 - 20, 2025
Spring Break is the approximate timeframe Green University LLC staff requires to take a deep breath and prepare for students arriving for the new semester. Immersion students are welcome to stay at River Camp and continue working on projects throughout the break, with the understanding that our instructors are officially off duty and may or may not be available for teaching and mentoring during this time.
March is typically still wintery in Montana, where the trees don't leaf out until mid-May, so don't expect green grass and sunbathing during Spring Break.
Our instructors sometimes take road trips in search of early spring elsewhere, and may or may not invite students to join them on their personal adventures to go car camping, backpacking, or canoeing anywhere that is warmer and more inviting than home. These are not Green University LLC sanctioned programs, just an opportunity to emerge from hibernation for some fun with friends from the River Camp community.
In the spring of 2022, Tom Elpel and partner Linda Welsh hiked the Arizona Trail and invited friends and vacationing G.U. students to join the adventure. We were joined by Linda's friend Vanne, who had previously hiked the entire Arizona Trail, and Evan from G.U. who had no significant prior backpacking experience. Tom and Linda section-hiked the first 300 miles, while Vanne and Evan continued on to complete the 800-mile trail.
Summer Break
August 1 - September 20, 2025
Summer Break is the approximate timeframe Green University LLC staff requires to unwind and enjoy Montana's short, but intense summer season.
Green University LLC is officially dismissed for summer vacation at this time. Nevertheless, Immersion students are welcome to stay at River Camp and continue working on projects throughout the break, with the understanding that our instructors are officially off duty and may or may not be available for teaching and mentoring.
August is the month when berries ripen in earnest, and our staff may be off harvesting huckleberries, service berries, wild raspberries, chokecherries, or other wild fruits. Green University LLC is officially in recess for summer, however, individual instructors may invite students to join them as friends for berry picking or adventuring by foot, bicycle, canoe, or otherwise. In August of 2022, Tom Elpel and friends did a 17-day canoe adventure through Montana's Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River. For 2023, Tom is hoping to complete a previously-started canoe adventure down Montana's Yellowstone River. Anyone may ask to join the expedition.
Departing students should also take this time to wrap up projects and clean out their living spaces to make room for the incoming class. Thank you for your consideration!.
